Let’s face it, beautiful skin takes a lot of work. Oftentimes, we remember to exfoliate our faces, but how many of us remember to exfoliate the rest of our body? Our skin is constantly sloughing off dead skin cells and these cells need to be exfoliated to avoid build up. The use of body scrubs in the shower can help even skin tone and keep the skin hydrated, soft, and silky smooth.
Most dermatologists recommend exfoliating two to three times per week max with sensitive skin sufferers advised to exfoliate once a week or once every two weeks. As is true with all beauty regimens, you should develop a schedule that works with your skin and not against it. And remember that the purpose of exfoliating is to remove dead skin cells, so you should not have to scrub too hard or too often. If your skin is left feeling sore and red, then you are probably scrubbing too hard.
Today, I’d like to share one of my favorite recipes for a DIY homemade body scrub using coffee, olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil and brown sugar. Here are the ingredients you will need:
1/2 cup of shea butter
3 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp coconut (melted, but not hot)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup ground coffee (caffeinated)
Air tight storage containers (Hobby Lobby offers some great choices)
Once you have gathered your ingredients, begin by gently heating the shea butter using the double boiler method. You want to soften the shea butter, but not melt it. Once you have the shea butter softened, transfer it to a mixing bowl and mix on high speed for 3-4 minutes until you have reached a whipped cream consistency.
Next, combine your olive oil and melted (but not hot) coconut oil. Very slowly pour the oil mixture into the bowl of shea butter while mixing on high speed until the oil has been incorporated into the shea butter. Continue to mix for an additional 1-2 minutes. At this point, if you would like to add any additional essential oils for aroma or therapy, this is the time to do so.
The final step is to add your brown sugar and ground coffee, gently mixing in with a large spoon. The ground coffee and brown sugar offer a wonderful smell and serve as great exfoliators. In addition, studies have shown that the caffeine itself in the ground coffee offers additional therapeutic qualities for your skin. If you prefer, you can replace the brown sugar and ground coffee with other exfoliating ingredients, such as salt or ground oats. Now that you’ve created your body scrub, simply divide into your containers for future use and/or decorate to give as homemade gifts. Say goodbye to unhealthy skin and hello to a rejuvenated and silky smooth you.
