Initially developed as a complementary holiday to Mother’s Day, Father's Day began in the early 20th century with credit for establishment of the holiday going to Sonora Dodd. Believe it or not, it was at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington in 1910 where Father’s Day dialogue first began. Dodd wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran, who had raised his six children as a single parent, and suggested June 5th as an appropriate date. Because church pastors did not have time to prepare their sermons in time by June 5th, the date was moved to the third Sunday in June. And voila, the notion of Father’s Day was born.
Father’s Day, however, did not soar to success right away. The celebration lulled until the 1930’s when a renewed passion for promoting Father’s Day emerged. Americans still resisted the celebration of Father’s Day, citing the commercialization of such an honorary event. It was not until 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day that the interest of the public was peaked. In 1972, President Richard Nixon declared Father’s Day a permanent national holiday and by the mid-1980’s, Father’s Day was truly accepted by the public.
Fast-forward to the 21st century and Father’s Day is eagerly anticipated with thoughts of family get-togethers, sunny days, and a poolside grill; the history to which many have never considered. The primary focus of Father’s Day now resides in figuring out what to get your loved one for such an occasion. While Father’s Day gifts can range from one end of the spectrum to the other, we like to recognize a father’s style and grandeur with luxury men’s products.
